Parenthesis

is one of a pair of signs ( ).

In math, they indicate that the enclosed operations should be calculated first.

It's rare to see a single parenthesis; they usually come in pairs.

Exponent

in math, a number indicates the power to which another number is to be raised.

It is written as a superscript.

In the phrase "four squared," 2 is the exponent.

That means 4 will be used as a factor 2 times.

Multiply

to add a number to itself a specific number of times.

When you multiply 4 by 3, it's the same as adding 4 to itself 3 times.

Divide

to determine how many times one number is contained in another number.

When you divide 12 by 6, you get 2.

Add

to put two or more numbers together to find the total.

Young students might count on their fingers to add numbers together.

Subtract

to take one number or quantity away from another.
